Centres of Excellence

The Centres of Excellence  act as the focal point for the commercialisation of regional science. They \'condition\' research and technology so that it can be utilised for commercial purposes, enter the marketplace as a new and innovative product, process or service, and thus enhance the Region\'s competitiveness and Productivity.

Cels
Cels exists to drive growth of the health, healthcare and life science economies of North East England. It does this by supporting the region\'s existing companies, helping to launch and support new companies, attracting investment and new healthcare organisations to the region, helping companies diversify into healthcare markets, sits at the hub of a global network of healthcare and bio-clusters, manages regional networks for healthcare R&D and inter-company collaboration, develops and runs business incubator and bio-park facilities, providing a wide range of commercial, fore-sighting and business support services.

Centre for Process Innovation (CPI)
CPI is a UK-wide resource that stimulates and drives innovation within the Process Industry by working with global industry partners and leading research universities to deliver world-class, groundbreaking applied research and development. This includes the development of integrated demonstrator units for process development for technologies including bio-processing, batch to continuous(B2C) processing and supercritical fluids.

Codeworks
Codeworks fosters the growth of the region’s digital industries and builds global leadership in specific areas of digital media and technology. One of the company’s major divisions, ATL, applies this approach exclusively to the use of digital technology that allows people to enjoy life in later years and remain healthy and independent for longer and the development of digital technology to offer cost-effective healthcare and social care solutions.

NaREC - The Centre of Excellence for New & Renewable Energy
NaREC was set up to bring substantial benefits to the UK\'s new and renewable energy industry, fast-tracking concept evaluation, feasibility studies and prototype evaluation and testing through to early commercialisation. It provides a high level of investment in research, to maintain and develop our technological and scientific expertise. This is based on a solid bedrock of partnerships comprising leading universities and industry. Their collective investment is focused on developments that can be quickly converted into services and processes with clear, practical applications and benefits for industry.
