Biopharma - The Industrial Base
Today, 16% of the North East’s total employees work in healthcare and life sciences, the sector has a turnover of £8bn a year and the region generates 30% of the UK’s economic output of pharmaceuticals.
Every kind of business, from multinationals to innovative spin outs and start ups is to be found here and there is a significant cluster of regional biopharmaceutical supply chain companies already established, with an estimated combined turnover of more than £500m.
Companies can be divided into two groups: manufacturers and specialist suppliers and cover a diverse range of activities. These activities include bioprocess development for mammalian cell culture and microbial expression systems; the production of sterile filtration systems and the supply of cell culture media and bioprocess containers. Production of high value protein A products for worldwide sale also takes place within the region, as does the supply of highly novel chromatography material.
