Cels at Newcastle
Background (download PDF)
Specifically for healthcare and life sciences companies, the Cels at Newcastle Microincubator Facility is situated within Newcastle University’s Medical Faculty and provides an effective, nurturing environment for early stage businesses, or those wishing to relocate to North East England.
Funded by One North East and managed by Cels, it not only offers state-of-the-art facilities and expert development guidance, but is also right at the heart of one of the country’s most outstanding academic institutions, with close access to clinicians.
Project
Opened in 2006 and since extended, the incubator suite can accommodate seven early-stage companies in fully serviced facilities that include high specification wet lab units, a board room and office space.
Ongoing support and guidance is provided across widely ranging issues, including procurement, best practice and grant and investor funding, and through the Cels’ extensive networks, links are developed with academic and commercial professionals. Fully occupied since day one, the facility now accommodates a diverse range of early-stage and inward investment companies and has recently expanded to create an additional two labs.
Tenants include Genesis Genomics UK, who have found the facilities a helpful springboard to commercialising and developing scientific research in this country and RNL Bio, a Korean firm specialising in stem cell research. Cels has facilitated close working between the companies, research scientists within Newcastle University and clinicians.
Cels has also provided managerial assistance to BioTransformations Ltd., helping them develop an appropriate business and clinical development plan in preparation for funding. Their proprietary technology utilising light activated therapeutic antibodies represents a breakthrough in cancer treatment.
Outcome
Once companies become established and outgrow the incubator, Cels continues to help their ongoing development and the
commercialisation of their technology. As the incubator becomes more established, links between academia and industry are also being strengthened. A recent, highly valuable collaboration between tenants and Newcastle University’s Careers Service has enabled Medical School students to gain practical experience of working within the commercial lab space. This has brought benefits to students and tenants alike.
Cels at Newcastle is proving to be an important part of the healthcare and life sciences infrastructure in North East England and Cels will continue to use its well established networks to promote good practice in incubation by generating synergy between companies within the micro-incubator, external businesses and the region’s universities.
Bringing together like-minded companies and individuals; encouraging the sharing of information and experience, as well as intellectual and business resources, is already bringing pioneering technology into the marketplace and enabling tenants to compete on a global basis.
